How to reduce eye puffiness and take care of the skin under your eyes

17th May 2020

A good night sleep is essential. But sometimes, even with 8 hours of sleep, eye-bags can still appear when you wake up. These bags appear for many reasons, including dehydration, genetics, and sunlight exposure, amongst others reasons.

While sometimes they’re unavoidable, the good news is that there is a lot you can do to reduce dark circles, puffiness, and even wrinkles. Here you can find five tips on how to reduce eye-bags and take care of the skin under your eyes.

1.Hydration and moisturise

The skin around the eyes is particularly sensitive to dryness and dehydration. This happens for two reasons:

  • It’s the thinner skin in our body (only, 0,5mm), and therefore it shows signs of stress, lack of humidity, and ageing first.
  • That specific region of our face lacks oil glands, which means it doesn’t produce the natural moisturiser the rest of our skin does.

In this sense, drinking enough water and practising a night skin-care routine is essential to help avoid waking up with eye puffiness. You should be drinking at least eight glasses of water per day, especially drinking water straight after you wake up, this will make a noticeable difference in how the skin around your eyes looks.

When it comes to skin-care, you can generally use the same face cream for taking care of the skin under your eyes too. But if you feel secondary effects or are looking to diminish a specific problem, you may need to look for some particular nutrients.

For wrinkles, collagen and hyaluronic acids are the best remedies. And even when you can buy collagen products, it may also work to ingest high collagen-levels foods, like bone broth or starchy root vegetables. Also, you can opt for anti-wrinkle products.

For dark circles and puffiness, which form common eye-bags, you need to pay attention to the sun, your sleeping pattern and consume vitamin C and vitamin E and B complex. Other substances that reduce puffiness considerably are green tea and caffeine.

  • 2.Sun and sunscreen

We can’t insist on this enough; to take care of your health, you should wear sunscreen every day. But, especially if you’re aiming to reduce eye puffiness, this product is essential.

The UVA rays can both accelerate your skin ageing process while you can darken the circles around your eyes. If applying sunscreen every day is not possible for you for any reason, you can now find UV-factor sunglasses. But remember that this only covers your eyes, leaving the rest of your face unprotected. That's why sunscreen is more recommendable.

You should use products that are good for your skin, especially if you wear makeup too. If you wear makeup every day, it may be better for you to choose beauty products that already include UV protection.

  • 3.Cold tea-bag compress

Green tea and other caffeinated substances help with the swelling which generates under eye puffiness. Green tea is known for considerable antioxidant properties, which slows down the ageing process.

When applying them in a cold compress, the effects multiply.

You can buy cosmetic compresses that include not only tea but also other nutrients. But if you are not willing to make or buy a cold compress, there’re some other options:

  • Cold spoons
  • Cold cucumber slices
  • 4.Antihistamines

Sometimes, eye-bags can be a consequence of nasal congestion. Use antihistamines to release the accumulated mucus on your nasal canals, this will help reduce inflammation and, therefore, eyes puffiness.

Remember to use distilled water or at least boiled water to use the solution if you’ll do it yourself.

Histamines, on the other hand, are the medical option for allergies. But we strongly recommend that you see your doctor to prescribe the proper medication for you.

  • 5.Avoid sleeping with makeup.

Besides these tips, we recommend you avoid sleeping with your makeup on. Of course, removing your makeup requires specific products that adapt to your skin and the gentle care your face needs. Also, make sure to apply these products with mild touches. This way, you won’t irritate your skin in the process.

Now it’s time for you to choose your favourite tip and put them into practice and see how your under eye skin looks younger, vivid and healthy, with no dark circles or puffiness!
